There is no single best AI takeoff tool for painting contractors, and as of 2026 the question “which one has AI?” no longer separates them — nearly all of them do. PlanSwift added AI auto-takeoff through its Takeoff Boost add-on in May 2026 and STACK advertises STACK Assist, alongside AI-first platforms like Togal.AI and Kreo. What actually separates them is what you buy: a tool you operate (PlanSwift, STACK, Kreo, Togal.AI), a done-for-you takeoff service (Beam AI), or a costing system built around your own pricing (Blackfrog — not something you can buy off the shelf, which for most readers of this page makes it the wrong answer).
We build costing systems for contractors, so treat this page with the appropriate suspicion. What we can offer that a neutral roundup usually cannot is the part we spend our working days on: the question that separates these tools, which is not the one the demos answer.
This page describes each tool’s approach — the thing that stays true between releases — rather than feature lists or pricing, which change fast enough to be wrong by the time you read them. Descriptions were checked against each vendor’s current public material in July 2026; confirm current specifics directly with anyone you shortlist. Almost every frustrating software evaluation in this category comes from comparing tools that are not trying to do the same job. Sorting by feature list makes this worse. Sort by what arrives after you pay:
You drive it; the software makes measuring fast and organized, and increasingly does a first pass of the detection for you. PlanSwift and STACK come at this from the established-platform direction — deep assembly libraries that turn measured areas into priced scope, with AI layered on more recently. Kreo and Togal.AI come at it from the AI direction, where automated detection is the core of the product rather than an addition. Either way, you or your estimator is still the operator.
You send plans and a scope; quantities come back. Beam AI is the clearest example — their AI extracts the quantities, their QA team reviews the output, and the takeoff is returned in roughly 24 to 72 hours. You are buying a deliverable and somebody else’s process, not a seat licence.

Every one of these tools will produce a takeoff that looks right in a demo. The question that separates them is: how close does it land against a job you already priced yourself? Not against the vendor’s sample drawings — against a bid you won, compared line by line, with the vendor never having seen your numbers. Almost nobody asks this, and it is the only question whose answer you can act on.
The reason it matters is a property of modern systems rather than a knock on any particular vendor: they are fluent. A wrong quantity arrives looking exactly like a right one — same confidence, same formatting, same speed. There is no tell. You find out in the field, when the material runs short.
To be fair about it: several vendors in this category do publish accuracy figures. You will see claims in the high nineties, and Beam AI publishes a tolerance against in-house takeoff. Those are not empty numbers and we are not going to pretend otherwise. But apply the same four questions to every one of them, ours included: what was the ground truth, was the figure an aggregate or measured per line, who checked it, and can you reproduce it on your own job? An accuracy percentage without a stated method is a marketing number — and that is as true of a flattering one as an unflattering one.
The number worth having is not the one in anybody’s brochure. It is the one you generate yourself, on a job you already priced.
So run the comparison before you buy. Take a completed job, hand over the same drawings, withhold your numbers, and compare line by line with your estimator. It costs an afternoon. For what it is worth, here is our own result under that test: on a 47-page architectural set for a roughly 37,000 sq ft residence, our system reproduced the estimator’s completed priced interior bid to 97.5%, with the largest scope item within about 1% of his manual takeoff. The honest reading — including what the 2.5% means and where aggregates hide error — is in the benchmark article. We would encourage you to demand the equivalent from anyone else you shortlist.
You need something working this month, your bids are varied rather than repetitive, or you would rather own the process yourself than depend on anyone. This describes most painting contractors. PlanSwift or STACK if you want the established platform and the deep assembly library; Kreo or Togal.AI if you would rather start from the AI side and skip the desktop software. Evaluate on your own drawings, never the demo set, and check specifically what happens when a drawing is ambiguous — whether the tool flags the conflict or quietly picks one.
You do not want to operate anything. You would rather send plans out and get checked quantities back, and a day or two of turnaround is fine. Beam AI is built for exactly that, and for a sub who bids steadily but has no estimator to spare, it is often the most sensible answer on this page.
You have high-value estimating work that repeats, your pricing structure is specific enough that generic assemblies fight you, and the cost of being wrong is large enough to justify engineering verification into the workflow. That is a narrow description, and if it does not sound like you, one of the products above will serve you better and cost you less.
A thing we will say against our own interest: if your bids are mostly small residential repaints priced from a walkthrough, none of this is your bottleneck. Software will not fix a pipeline problem, and the honest advice is to spend the money on getting in front of more customers instead.

Get current numbers from each vendor, and when comparing, include the cost of the review time that any of these still requires.
